Written by Christina B. Young, Daniel Z. Fang, and Sidney Zisook, this article addresses a very sensitive topic among college students: depression. This article specifically compares the levels of depression between Asian-American and Caucasian undergraduate students at the University of San Diego. The results of the study show that Asian-Americans were generally more depressed than their Caucasian counterparts. Korean-Americans were especially depressed or prone to depression, but this could also be due to the fact that this school has a relatively high percentage of Asians/Koreans.
Because depression is a very serious medical condition, it is important to recognize diversity factors. It can be useful to pay special attention to those who are more likely to suffer from depression in order to include them in societal norms and what not. For example, Asian-American may suffer from depression as a result of potential discrimination (such as stereotyping like feeling inadequate when failing to maintain a good GPA because non-Asian peers expect high grades). Including these students can increase the inclusion of more people so acceptance of diversity increases.
